Introduction to Photoencaustic Learn how to combine your photographs with encaustic wax! Encaustic wax, used while melted, is an ancient medium that blends beautifully with photographic images to produce rich, unique hand-made pieces. The workshop will cover safety and basic techniques then will explore more complex techniques such as adding layers or texture. Each student will be able to make at least 3 small pieces using their own photographs, and all supplies are included. This class will build on techniques from the Introduction to Photoencaustic class, with emphasis on encaustic methods. We’ll look at other ways to incorporate images into an encaustic piece such as image transfer, tissue paper prints, and gluing a matte photo onto the board. (previous worskhop) April 24, 2024 at Chelsea Art Center, Ocala, FL April 25, 2024 at Chelsea Art Center, Ocala, FL Additional 2024 dates TBA, note that most of my Introduction to Photoencaustic workshops are open to Intermediate students who want to learn more encaustic techniques Cyanotype: Images in Blue and More Than Blue In this 2-day workshop, students will create cyanotype prints using their own personal digital images then explore creative modifications to the original prints in blue. We’ll discuss the process, applications, and versatility of this 1800’s process as adapted to the 21st century. We’ll use the cyanotype process to make 5x7 and 8x10 blue-and-white archival prints which will be used on the second day for modifications and enhancements. Some prints will be bleached, then the entire print toned with natural substances such as coffee or black tea. Students will also get to experiment with selectively toning only parts of the print, including different natural substances used on different areas, and to explore subtle use of watercolor paints or pan pastels on selected areas.
